Communicating globally

My job leads me to attend technical conferences being held all over the World, almost all year round and on an endless variety of subjects. My experience tells me that usually these conferences are held over a two or three day period and the people attending there can come from every corner of the globe. Unless the conference is totally regional, in most cases the conference language is English by default. Many of the speakers are non native English speakers and as they enthusiastically present their thesis, product, service or concept it can become fairly to very difficult to understand them and the message that they are trying to put across. However without exception these people who work the conference circuit, like me, have realized the value of a multimedia presentation usually based around the Microsoft PowerPoint program can give them. The major points of their presentation can be shown visually and at a pace that everyone can understand.

Making Presentations: Outlines

When you are creating a speech for a presentation, it is important to have a general outline. This outline will serve to be a great resource to have when you are creating a PowerPoint presentation or a slide show of any kind.

Because Powerpoints are meant to have minimal information and are mainly there for guidance, they can act as an outline. You won't have to carry any extra papers or note cards around.

Print outs of outlines are also a good idea when Multimedia Presentation Software. You can hand them out and allow people to follow along and take notes while you are speaking.

Effective public speaking tips to win your audience

In addition to knowing your audience’s needs, it is important for you to determine their characteristics before the presentation. Although they might have the same interests, they may differ in many other aspects such as age, gender, economic status, cultural background and the like. When public speaking, prepare a presentation that would be able to meet expectations and needs of different kinds of people as much as possible.

Be presentable – Like an actor performing on stage, you are the center of attention when speaking or presenting to an audience. One way of sustaining your audience’s interest is to show a desirable image to them.  You can do this by dressing appropriately, standing or moving confidently without appearing arrogant, and staying calm and unruffled. By being presentable, you exude authority and mastery of your presentation. It’s also one way of establishing rapport with your audience.

Watch your body language – Simple gestures, facial expressions and hand movements or even sitting or standing positions could communicate a different and unintended message to your audience. They could suggest meanings that could lose their interest or their respect to you as the presenter. Avoid unnecessary gestures, facial expressions and body movements that could distract your listeners.

Use visual aids – Visual aids are effective transmitters of message. They come in handy when you are lost for words, presenting highly technical concepts, or have been talking for a long time already. It can break the monotony of your presentation or discussion and can help deliver your message clearly and more effectively.
